Cyber Monday 2010 – Price Comparisons & Insights

You’ve probably noticed that there are dozens (if not hundreds) of websites offering ‘exclusive’ Cyber Monday deals and coupons.  But there aren’t many (if any) that offer a solid price comparison on this season’s best-selling items.  So I took it upon myself to wake up in the wee hours of Cyber Monday 2010 to check out prices and identify which websites truly offer the best Cyber Monday coupons.  I compared prices on electronics at Walmart, Circuit City, Best Buy, TigerDirect and Amazon.  Here’s what I found:

iPod Touch – The standard price for the iPod Touch 8GB bundle is $229.99, but you can find some better deals if you look around.  Fortunately, I’ve already done the hard part for you!  One of my favorite deals is at Best Buy, where you can get a free Insignia GPS with the purchase of any iPod Touch (including the 8GB, which of course costs $229.99).  Score this deal (online only) here.  A word of warning – although the deal is available at the time of this publishing, I discovered on Black Friday that Best Buy often has very limited quantities of their best deals, so you’d better act fast if you want it.  Walmart comes in second with the 8GB bundle for $210, with free site to store shipping.  Amazon’s price is $214, while TigerDirect and Circuit City don’t offer the product at all.

Flip Ultra HD camcorder – The standard price for the Flip Ultra HD camcorder is $99.99 for the 4GB version and there aren’t many price reductions for Cyber Monday.  You can save a bit of money by purchasing a refurbished model, which is available for $69.96 on TigerDirect for the 4GB version and $99.99 for the 8GB Flip.  Amazon’s refurbished version is priced at $95.  As usual, refurbished versions are available in limited quantities only.  Best Buy loses this price war by selling the 4GB Flip for about $20 more than every other store.

Canon Powershot SD1300 12.1MP digital camera – This is one of the most popular pocket digital cameras of the year, and as a proud Canon Powershot owner, I can tell you it’s definitely a sturdy investment.  The camera is available in a range of colors from silver to bright orange.  The prices for this item were perhaps the most surprising.  Walmart, which prides itself on the lowest electronics prices, but its prices for this camera were not even close to its competitors.  Walmart is selling this camera on Cyber Monday for $149 with a free 2GB memory card.  In comparison, Amazon, the best place to buy the Canon Powershot, is offering the same product for $129.99 with a free 4GB memory card. Both stores do offer free shipping to home.  Target, TigerDirect and Circuit City all offer the camera for $129.99, but of those, only Target offers free shipping.

Where to find Cyber Monday coupons and extra savings:

  • Gift Card Granny has gift cards at prices below face value here.
  • If you’re looking for the ultimate Cyber Monday guide (and have time to sift through irrelevant stores), check out cybermonday.com.
  • Ebates, of course, can help you save an additional percentage on any of your online purchase.  If you’re not a member, you can also get a free $10 gift card for a limited time only.
  • Finally, you can check out savings.com for coupon codes that can be added to your favorite Cyber Monday deals.

My final piece of advice – if you’re shopping for yourself, don’t feel pressured to buy something just because it’s Cyber Monday.  My research indicates that prices weren’t dropped to unbelievable prices, and that they may still fall further, possibly after the holiday season.  If you’re not in a rush, showing restraint may pay off big in the long run.
